Attributed to Gillis van Valckenborch - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp ca. 1570–1622 Frankfurt/Main)
Battle involving cavalry and war elephants outside fortifications (possibly scenes from a battle of Alexander the Great),
oil on canvas, 169,5 x 213,5 cm, framed

Provenance:
South German private collection

We are grateful to Alexander Wied who confirmed the attribution of the painting at hand to Gillis van Valckenborch after inspecting the original.

Gillis van Valckenborch was the son of the painter Martin van Valckenborch and brother to Frederick van Valckenborch. Scenes from Greek or Roman history and mythology are typical of his work. His mannerist figures appear in agitated masses, frequently against the background of dramatic skies. The present painting is closely related in composition and arrangement to Gillis van Valckenborch’s Sanherib’s Defeat before Jerusalem (1597) at the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum at Braunschweig.
