Attributed to Jasper van der Laanen
(ca. 1585- after 1624)
Three angels appearing to Abraham,
oil on canvas 112,5 x 120,1 cm, unframed
Provenance:
Sotheby’s sale, New York, 10th June 2011, Lot 240
In 1607, Jasper van der Lanen was accepted into the workshop of Nicolaas Geerts; in 1615 he became a master at the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp; in 1624 he married Elisabeth Rombouts, with his fellow artist Abraham Govaerts acting as his witness.
At the time, the majority of Flemish artists specialised in a particular genre or field. Like Abraham Govaerts, Jasper van der Lanen mainly painted landscape. As is the case with the present composition, his landscapes often served as settings for religious motifs, with the figures occasionally added by figure painters such as Frans Francken II.
