Circle of Raffaello Sanzio, called as Raphael

Circle of Raffaello Sanzio, called as Raphael - Old Master Paintings

(Urbino 1483–1520 Rome),
The Virgin and Child,
oil on panel, 74,3 x 52 cm, unframed

The present painting is based on Raphael’s Madonna Colonna, currently at the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. The painting’s quality and close stylistic resemblance to Raphael suggest that its artist may have been an intimate acquaintance. Raphael’s Madonna Colonna, originally part of the Florentine Salviati Collection, was later acquired by the Colonna Collection in Rome, thus obtaining its name. As far as we know, Raphael did not keep a proper workshop in Florence, instead employing collaborators when necessary, for major commissions. The painter of the above painting may have belonged to this circle of collaborators.

Possible attributions to Eusebio di San Giorgio (Perugia ca. 1470 – after 1539) and Domenico Alfani (Perugia ca. 1479 – 1549–57) have been suggested.

The present painting is based on Raphael’s Madonna Colonna currently at the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. The painting’s quality and close resemblance to the work of Raphael suggest that its artist may have been a close acquaintance. Raphael’s Madonna Co
