Nicolaes Maes

Nicolaes Maes - Old Master Paintings

(Dordrecht 1634–1693 Amsterdam)
At the Poulterer’s Shop,
oil on canvas, 74.5 x 92.1 cm, framed

Provenance:
Galerie Douwes, Amsterdam (2005)

Exhibited:
Hoorn, Westfries Museum, Smakelijk Eten in de Gouden Eeuw, 2010/11

Literature:
W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, vol. VI, p. 3731, no. 2374 (as N. Maes, dating from 1656/58);
W. W. Robinson, The Early Works of Nicolaes Maes, 1653 to 1661, doctoral thesis, 1996, no. C24 (as follower of N. Maes);
L. Krempel, Studien zu den datierten Gemälden des Nicolaes Maes, Petersberg, 2000, p. 355, no. D-7, fig. 59 (as N. Maes)

Fred Meijer has suggested an alternative attribution of the present painting to Justus de Gelder, a painter born in 1650 and the stepson of Nicolaes Maes.

Leon Krempel, the author of the catalogue raisonné of the works of Nicolaes Maes, as well as Werner Sumowski before him, published the painting as an autograph work and dated it to 1659.
