The following flags can be recognised:
(1) the flag of the Spanish Netherlands, the so-called ‘Cross of Burgundy’ (on the fortress)
(2) the English Saint George’s Cross
(3) the flag of the Low Countries
(4) the Dutch ‘Double Prince’ flag
(5) the Danish flag
Views of Mediterranean ports like the present painting are rare in the oeuvre of the Flemish painter Bonaventura Peeters. He mostly depicted ships on the River Scheldt or in the North Sea.
