![Aert van der Neer - Old Master Paintings Aert van der Neer - Old Master Paintings](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A150421/normal/aert-van-der-neer-2892341.jpg)
(Gorinchem 1603/04–1677 Amsterdam)
A river landscape with fishing boats at dusk,
oil on panel, 27 x 40 cm, framed
Provenance:
Collection of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria (before 1825, a lacquer seal with the royal coat of arms in the form used between 1806 and 1825 on the reverse)
We are grateful to Wolfgang Schulz, Berlin, for confirming the authenticity of the present painting after its examination in the original (written communication).
Unlike many other landscapes by Van der Neer, the present picture does not show a nocturnal scene, but renders a romantic evening atmosphere. The painting was unknown to Schulz. It is an important addition to the oeuvre of this artist, who was underestimated during his lifetime and today is regarded as one of the leading landscapists of the Golden Age of Dutch painting. Wolfgang Schulz compares the present painting to works by Van der Neer in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich and in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
