Jakob Grünenwald - 19th Century Paintings

Between 1840 and 1852 Jakob Grünewald enrolled as a pupil at the Art School in Stuttgart and joined the classes of Bernhard von Nehrer (1806–1886) and Johann Friedrich Dietrich (1787–1846). At this time he focused on paintings with religious themes. In 1853 he moved to Munich where he collaborated with a great number of eminent painters and received a large number of public commissions. By then he was highly interested in reproducing genre scenes which enjoyed enormous popularity. He became known to a broader audience by the copious reproduction of his most famous paintings as prints. From 1877 onwards he worked as the head of the drawing class at the art school in Stuttgart.
