Hermann Reichsfreiherr von Königsbrunn
(Radkersburg 1823–1907 Graz)
Scene of Ceylon, monogrammed (ligature), dated H.K. (1)904, oil on canvas, 80 x 120 cm, framed (frame damaged), (Rei)
Herrmann von Königsbrunn studied law in Graz and Vienna, becoming a civil servant in 1845. Having taken part in the Viennese revolution of 1848 he was subsequently forced to leave Austria. He fled to Munich where he dedicated himself to his artistic studies with Leopold Rottmann (1812–1881). After a short return to his home city of Graz, and having been expelled once again, he moved to Salzburg, joining the landscapist Johann Fischbach. In 1851 he took part as a tour guide on an expedition organised by Styrian industrialist Franz Ritter von Friedau and zoologist Ludwig Karl Schmarda to Ceylon, Egypt and Greece.
There he built up a rich collection of sketches which he used as the basis for his paintings executed after returning to Styria.
