Hans Makart received his first drawing instruction in Salzburg. In 1858 he studied at the Vienna Academy under Christian Ruben, and from 1859 to 1865 at the Munich Academy under Carl von Piloty. In 1862 he travelled to London and Paris, 1866 to Italy and in 1877 to Antwerp and Spain. He spent the winter of 1875/76 with Franz von Lenbach and Leopold Carl Müller in Egypt. In 1879 he was appointed Professor for historical painting at the Vienna Academy, and from 1871 he was a member of Vienna’s Künstlerhaus.

Christine del Negro was the pseudonym of Christine Thaler, neé Greiner (Munich 1853-1936). She was a German poet, novellist and journalist. From 1870–1880 she was the Italian and Egyptian correspondent for German newspapers including the Gartenlaube, Augsburger Allg. Zeitung, and the Frankfurter Journal. She subsequently worked as a feature writer and novellist in Vienna.
