rectangular body with polychrome-painted image, ‘Cupid unfastening the girdle of Venus’ after Sir Joshua Reynolds, inscribed verso, monogrammed in pen, Robert Theer, 15 x 17 cm, with frame 29 x 32 cm, Vienna, Imperial Manufactory, impressed shield mark, year number 1849, turner no. 33 Johann Binder 1831–1865 (Ru)

Lit.: Wurzbach, Robert Theer 1808–1863, portrait painter and lithographer, brother of Adolf and Albert, son of gemstone cutter, Joseph Theer. The original painting by J. Reynolds, 1st version entitled, ‘A Nymph and Cupid’ was exhibited in 1784 at the Royal Academy and is now held by the Tate Gallery. In 1788 he reprised this subject matter for Lord Carysford with the title, ‘Cupid Untying the Zone of Venus’, today in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg. The model for Venus was Emma Hart, the wife of Sir William Hamilton and lover of Sir Admiral Nelson.
