The son of the landscape painter Jakob Alt and the brother of the architecture and landscape painter Rudolf von Alt. Originally the pupil of his father Franz turned to portrait painting at the Vienna Academy and then to architecture and landscape painting. He particularly engaged in watercolour painting. From 1844 onwards he worked independently; he brought home numerous sketches and pitturesque views from his journeys to Central- and South Europe.
