A large Canton enamel box

A large Canton enamel box - Asian art

China, Qing dynasty, 18th century. With eight-lobed, undulating rim on a low foot. To the cover, a very finely painted scene with figures in a palace garden on the banks of a river, in the foreground a pavilion and a horseman on a bridge. The upper side walls decorated with the eight Buddhist auspicious symbols alternating with various flowers on a dark blue ground, the lower surfaces depicting various fruits and flowers, framed by ruyi and lotus leaf borders. The box was presumably used for confectionery and probably originally had inserts. Some traces of use with restoration. Ø 38 cm; height 16 cm. (BA)

Cf. a similar piece at the Palace Museum in Beijing, publ. in: Zhongguo Meishu Fenlei Quanji, Zhongguo Jiyin Boli Falanqi Quanji, vol. 6, p. 140, no. 215.
