A bronze disk for a table screen
China, Qing dynasty, 18th century. Cast in relief, to one side, an image of the legendary journey to the moon of Emperor Xuanzong (reigned 712–756): to the right-hand side, a cinnamon tree with a palace gate alongside it, from which the moon fairy, Chang E is arriving accompanied by a servant to meet the emperor and the Master of Heaven (Daioist divinity), who are floating above a cloud. In the foreground a rabbit, pounding a cinnamon stick in a mortar with a pestle, which is intended to ensure immortality. To the other side, three dragons encircling a conical finial. Ø 27 cm. (BA)
