English School, second half of the 17th century
Portrait of a lady, presumably Barbara Villiers (1640–1709), the Duchess of Cleveland,
oil on canvas, 148 x 122 cm, framed,
Provenance:
nobility, Southern Germany
In 1659, Barbara Villiers married Roger Palmer, the 1st Earl of Castlemaine, and in 1660 became the mistress ‘en titre’ of the English King Charles II, who raised her to the rank of Duchess of Cleveland in 1670. An attribution of the present painting to Sir Peter Lely has been suggested.
