Crocefisso, 1961, signed and dated on the reverse L. Fontana 61, painted and glazed ceramic, 39.5 x 21 cm
The present work is registered at the Archivio Lucio Fontana, Milan, under no. 2317/8.
Provenance:
Collection Giovanni Rossello, Albisola
Acquired there in 2000 by the present owner
Private Collection, Italy
In the 1930s, Fontana started exploring the potentials of high-fired ceramics both in Albisola and Sèvres, creating a number of figurative works – still lifes, animals, female heads, and religious subjects – in which realism succumbs to the expressive tension of the material, the torsions and consolidations of which lend the sculptures their dynamism. The use of iridescence and non-naturalistic colours augments the antimimetic impact, as do the Neo-Baroque undertones repeatedly pointed out by art critics. Albisola was also the place where Fontana made his first ‘Cuttings’ in 1953/54, a long time before the more famous versions on canvas.
