Her still lifes are characterised by a pronounced sense of harmony and detail that one hardly encounters elsewhere in Lassnig’s oeuvre. Unlike her earlier academic still lifes, they are more clearly accentuated in terms of form, colour, and composition. One might almost call them classic if there were not the small and surreally distorted self-portraits that have found their way into the pictures. As small lumps of meat, wire clamps attached to the tablecloth, a large mouth, or small wavy surges in red, they only become noticeable at a second glance. Moreover, pieces of fruit in plastic packaging or studded with nails lend some of these still lifes the peculiarity that is to be expected, as well as an additional painterly charm…
