Lot No. 616

Auguste Droz et Comp.

Auguste Droz et Comp. - Wrist and Pocket Watches

A pocket-watch with 1/4 hour striking mechanism, rosé gold 750, gilt cylinder movement via chain and fusee, key wind-up, skeletal movement with some engraving, enamelled dial ring, blued hands, 2 hammers on chime coils, smooth casing with coat-of-arms, engraved inscription: tout ou rien, ca 1830, Ø ca. 63 mm, 92,5 g, 2 keys framing the coat-of-arms of Baron Athenry (Peerage of Ireland) one of the oldest titles in Ireland. Following the death of Thomas Bermingham, 1st Earl of Louth, 19th Baron Athenry (1717-1799), without male heir, the title Earl of Louth became dormant. In 1827, a descendant of the younger brother of the 14th Baron of Athenry, claimed the title Baron Athenry. While he was found to be within his rights by the Attorney General for England and Wales, the House of Lords did not recognize him as titleholder. The use of this coat-of-arms probably dates to this period.
