Lot No. 135

Shahsavan gallery,

Shahsavan gallery, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

Northwest Persia (Iran), c. 388 x 109 cm, second half of the 19th century, this rare type with white ground and a lozenge-and-flower pattern embedded in a lattice, probably represents a group of its own, the few known specimens are attributed to Moghan or the Transcaucasian region; as regards the present piece (also worth mentioning are the well executed "four-legged figures"' in the upper field section), we are inclined to attribute it to the Shahsavan, since their tribe covers both geographical areas; the warp of the carpet is made with cotton and partly with cotton/sheep wool, the weft is made of cotton; in very good condition considering its age, with only very minor traces of usage and without any visible major repairs, the brown heavily oxidised, the side edges repaired. (MA)

Further reading:
James Burns, The Caucasus, Traditions in Weaving, p. 13;
Eberhart Herrmann, Seltene Orientteppiche, vol. IX, plate 33.
