Cope hood with orphreys,
Italy, c. 55 x 58 cm, 16th century, on a red, liturgical silk velvet are attached three fragments of chasuble orphreys; the two outer parts in gold and silk embroidery and appliqué technique most likely belonged – on the grounds of their size and workmanship – to an original longer piece; the middle fragment, with beautifully designed facial features and without gold threads, is the oldest and most archaic of the three orphreys; secured with linen on the back.
