Transylvanian double niche carpet,
Ushak, West Anatolia (Turkey), c. 159 (168) x 124 cm, mid-18th century, symmetrical knot, H 40, V 60 = c. 2,400 Kn./qm, "lazy lines";
rare specimen with ochre coloured field in vase type with a cartouche border, these groups mostly have a red ground and three cartouches are arranged on the short sides of the borders as well as four on the long sides (rarely three), on the present piece narrower cartouches were used on the white ground border and therefore it is, with five designed cartouche forms, a unique item among these already very rare carpets, the seamless transition of the pattern in the corners is also noteworthy, classic central field with two vases and sober background pattern with beautiful floral elements, outer secondary border with reciprocal crenellations in brown and red, inner border with star-shaped rosettes, the kilim ends preserved on both sides are very significant feature, the low pile matches with the high age, with only some minor repairs, side edges original. (MA)
