A wooden sculpture with a long body, the arms tightly fitting and the legs detached from the body. Painted with different earth colours, soot and white clay (three human figures and three objects painted on the back!).
Figures such as the present one can represent spirits from ‘dreams’ or deceased ancestors (this is the case, for instance, on the Tiwi Islands of Melville and Bathurst in the north, off the Australian coast). H: c. 60 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Purchased by Prof. Dr. Jan Jelinek during his first ‘Czechoslovak scientific expedition’ directly from the Aborigines in Arnhem Land, Northern Australia, in 1969. Since then preserved in the family collection in Brno, Czech Republic.
