Oceania, Bismarck Archipelago, Admiralty Islands: a dagger with a blade of volcanic obsidian stone.
A typical dagger of the Admiralty Islands. The blade consists of black, very hard, glass-like felsic lava called ‘obsidian’. The hilt is made of wood and cloaked in a mass produced from the fruit of the ‘Atuna racemosa’ tree. Characteristic patterns with spikes and crosses are incised in this type of ‘putty’ before drying, and then dyed with white, red and black pigments. Between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. L: 31 cm. (ME)
