New Guinea, Sepik, region near Wewak: A ‘Kundu’ hourglass drum with typical relief decoration.
The hourglass-shaped, hollow body of the drum is carved in brown wood. With a handle in the middle, depicting the stylised body of an animal. On the opposite side are two openwork spikes as decoration (the spikes were originally three). With all-round bands of spirals and spikes as relief decoration in between. The surfaces of the body of the drum feature four, very similarly executed reliefs: in the upper section a highly abstract face with sketched mouth and eyes is recognisable. In the middle of the ornamental relief are full human figures facing each other. The remaining surfaces of the relief are filled with spiral and spike motifs. Originally, the deep lines of the relief were coloured in white (residues are still detectable). The head of the present ‘Kundu’ hourglass drum consists of a piece of dragon skin attached with a vegetable band. Very good usage patina on the body of the drum and especially on the handle.
