Lot No. 231

Indonesia, Java, fabric with batik colouring: an old and signed, so-called ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ cloth.

Indonesia, Java, fabric with batik colouring: an old and signed, so-called ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ cloth. - Tribal Art

In the period between 1850 and 1900, it was fashionable in the textile centres on the northern coast of the island of Java to produce batik textiles with scenes derived from European books of fairytales. Javanese batik artists copied these scenes from illustrated Dutch books. Such is the case with the present, extremely interesting cloth (‘kain panjang’) with the figures from the fairytale, ‘Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf’!
Fabric foundation: cotton. A scene from ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ depicted five times in a row, dyed with batik technique. In the course of this procedure, surfaces are covered with liquid wax before the dyeing. The five ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ scenes are trimmed with a red border with leafy tendril decorations.
On the upper right, the signature of the batik artist on dark background is visible: ‘Ny. [that is, Ms] Oy King Liem, Kedoeng Woeni 5 (place of production)’. Very rare! Between 1850 and 1900. Dimensions: 107 cm x 227 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.
