A standing, female ancestor figure of the Belu (central Timor), carved in very hard, heavy wood and dyed a shiny black colour. The sculpture features a sketched hairstyle, deep-set round eyes with carved pupils, a large, short nose, a ‘laughing’ mouth and a narrow relief band around the neck. The arms are bent, the hands in front of the chest. The entire body of this ancestor figure is covered from head to toe with delicate, finely incised tattoos. With well-known Timor motifs designed in typical Timor style. An interesting, rare object, with good patina and only minor damage (an old crack to the right forearm, colour scuffed on the forehead, the nose, the back and the feet). First third of the 20th century; H: 50.5 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Purchased by the consignor on the Island of Timor in 1971. Austrian private collection.
