1: Hilt of a kris dagger depicting the demon ‘Buta Kala’. With his right hand he hides a branch with the fruit of the pudak tree behind his head. H: 13.5 cm.
2: Hilt of a kris dagger depicting the god ‘Bataru Bayu’ (or ‘Bima’, his son). ‘Bayu’ is the god of wealth and welfare (a variant of the Indian god of wind, Wayu). With a lotus flower as his sceptre. H: 15.5 cm.
3: Hilt of a kris dagger depicting demon ‘Kala’. It is the demon, or ‘god’, of time and one of the sons of the god Shiva. In each hand the demon holds one club (or a sword). H: 12.6 cm.
4: Hilt of a kris dagger depicting a bald demon. With a fringe of hair at the back of his head. This is possibly a special variant of the bald-headed tutelary spirit ‘Buta Maya Pengalah’. In his right hand he holds a container with the ‘elixir of eternal life’ (amerta). H: 13 cm.
All four kris hilts are cast and engraved in quality silver. Between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
