This form of double-edged dagger is the Philippine variant of the Indonesian ‘kris’. It is characteristic of the South Philippines, Mindanao and the Sulu Sea. The present, very beautiful ‘Punyal’ has a locally forged blade with 5 waves. The hilt displays a typical shape and consists of bone, brass and copper, cast and engraved with floral and geometrical decoration. The wood sheath is cloaked in brass and copper in three sections. The brass sheet metal is engraved with floral tendrils, the sections are united with cast, decorated copper bands, the hanging on the reverse is made of decorated brass. A rare and perfectly preserved piece. First third of the 20th century; L: 42 cm. (ME)
