A seated sculpture made of hard, heavy Narra wood. A so-called rice god, ‘Bulul’, of the Ifugao, Northern Philippines, on the island of Luzon. These ‘Bulul figures’ are placed in rice granaries in order to protect and promote the rice harvest, and they receive sacrificial offerings of pig’s blood during ritual ceremonies. The present ‘Bulul’ sits on a round plinth carved from the same piece of Narra wood. It displays old, black sacrificial patina and a round cavity for further sacrificial offerings on the top of the head. Minor pieces broken off and tears to the plinth as well as on the back of the figure due to age. First half of the 20th century or earlier. H: 60 cm. (ME)
Provenance: German private collection.
Lit.: ‘The People and Art of the Philippines’ by Casal, Trota Jose, Casino, Ellis and Solheim II, ill. 183, p. 224, XVI.
