Lot No. 199

Tibet, Nepal: A ‘thangka’ sacred scroll painting, depicting ten Buddhas, pupils, monks and worshippers.

Tibet, Nepal: A ‘thangka’ sacred scroll painting, depicting ten Buddhas, pupils, monks and worshippers. - Tribal Art

A sacred, Lamaistic Buddhist scroll painting, called ‘thangka’. The tempera painting, on primed canvas, displays ten sitting Buddha figures with different hand gestures (‘mudras’), in different costumes and before multicoloured haloes. A group of pupils, monks and worshippers sits or stands in front of each of these ten Buddhas. A finely executed painting, with a rare special peculiarity: on the reverse of the ‘thangka’, the meaning of each of the painted Buddhas is inscribed on the surface within the figure’s outline. With red colour and in dense Tibetan letters! This interesting scroll painting displays age damage: the fabric mount is missing and the remaining picture section of the ‘thangka’ shows small losses, staining and kinks as a result of former, improper storage. Dimensions: 80 cm x 48.3 cm. (ME)
