Afghanistan, Iran, Turkmenistan: Tekke-Turkmen: A large ‘asyk’ braid pendant made of silver, with 7 carnelians and remnants of gilding. - Tribal Art

Tekke-Turkmen girls wear their hair plaited in three braids. When they get married, they change their hairstyle to two braids in the back. For their wedding, brides receive such ‘asyk’ braid pendants, heirlooms inherited over generations, from their mothers in law for their festive attire. With them, both braids are fastened on the back.
The present braid pendant, in the ‘classic’ shape of large heart, is made of excellent silver and very old. The front side is engraved with typical, curved Tekke patterns, the borders and ridges are formed by hand in silver wire. With remnants of fire gilding and adorned with 7 set carnelians (the central cut flat, the others cabochon-cut). 19th century; H: 25.5 cm, W: 16 cm. (ME)
