Lot No. 169

Turkey: A rare, old, round wickerwork shield of the Ottomans, called ‘kalkan’, covered in iron. 17th/18th century.

Turkey: A rare, old, round wickerwork shield of the Ottomans, called ‘kalkan’, covered in iron. 17th/18th century. - Tribal Art

A very rare Ottoman round shield. Its basic structure dates back to the purely woven shields of the Mongols and early Turks in the 15th and 16th century: spirally plaited around a pane made of wood, thin plant rods are stitched firmly with fabric threads. In a colourful pattern (visible on the backside).
This ‘basic shield’ was reinforced with iron parts during the later Ottoman period. The ‘kalkan’ battle shield was thus able to protect both against arrows as well as against sword blows: With an iron border and a flat, iron shield boss adorned by five rectangular, iron knops. The inwardly indented border and the shield boss were connected to the present ‘kalkan’ with 25 iron pegs. All the iron pegs are still present. A crack and a loss (hole) in the vegetal foundation. The grip on the back is missing. Otherwise in good condition. An historically interesting piece! 17th/18th century. (ME)
