A necklace from Oman: 14 silver spherical pearls with spiky ends and two long, silver end pieces are threaded on an original thick, plaited fabric cord. Silver Austrian Maria Theresa Thalers are soldered as decorations on each of two opposing silver balls (minting: 1780). In the centre below hangs a broad amulet box (dimensions: 9.5 cm x 7 cm x 1.5 cm) on three eyelets, decorated with knops. The pendant can be opened on its narrow side. In its interior are Quranic suras on paper as a protective amulet. The amulet pendant is elaborately decorated with silver knopped ridges and silver wire. In the centre is a rectangular insert made of gold, surrounded by rhombs and circles made of gilded silver. On eleven eyelets hang 19 crescent-shaped silver pendants on a silver chain below.
A very beautiful, entirely original, well-preserved piece of jewellery with good, old usage patina. 19th century or earlier; L: 44 cm (in total). (ME)
