Bedouin, Jordan, Wadi Rum (or Wadi Ram): An old camel saddle purchased directly from the Bedouin in Wadi Rum.
The wooden structure of an old camel saddle of the Bedouin. Consisting of six segments, carved from wood, firmly attached with leather bands. The wide, vertical main supports feature a semicircular pommel each in the upper section, under which is a protective layer of light-coloured leather. Both are carved with linear geometrical decorations on the external side. The wooden structure of the camel saddle displays a very old usage patina and only minor age-related damage (a small original repair with sheet metal). Additionally two pouches made of wool, one brown with tassels, blue glass pearls and buttons (old), the other also made of wool, decorated with colourful tassels and buttons (more recent), as well as a collar made of wool, for a camel, with a blue-red-white geometrical pattern and colourful tassels. The saddle structure: First third of the 20th century, all others later. H: c. 50 cm, L: 54 cm, W: c. 40 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian private collection. According to the consignor, purchased before 1980 in Wadi Rum directly from the Bedouin.
