A ‘katatora’ of the Luba, with a head on top featuring the typical ‘cascading coiffure’ of the Luba subgroup of the Shankadi. ‘Katatora’ are tools belonging to a soothsayer, who uses them in an attempt to discover the persons responsible for illness, death and general misfortune (for a more detailed explanation cf. cat. no 95). The present ‘katatora’ is made of hard wood, dyed black and visibly old. As a result of prolonged use over many years, all edges are worn and rounded off. With excellent, partly shiny patina and some delicate cracks due to age. H: 11.2 cm; between the 19th and the early 20th centuries. (ME)
