Yoruba, Nigeria: A helmet mask, type: ‘Gelede’, with two birds as crests. - Tribal Art

A helmet or pull-on mask of the ‘Gelede cult’ (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 53), made of hard, brown wood. The face is pink, the mouth red, the typical tribal scarification marks, the rims of the eyes and the pupils, as well as the elaborate carved hairstyle, with three plaits on each side, are painted black. Surmounted by a black bird sitting on a smaller bird, painted red and yellow. Carved from a single piece. With good, old usage patina (see the fastening eyelets for the mask costume!). First half of the 20th century; H: 41 cm. (ME)
