Abron or Kulango, Ivory Coast: A beautiful ‘mother and child figure’.
A charming maternity figure attributable to the style of the Abron, Kulango or of smaller tribes of the so-called ‘Akan group’ (Fante, Agni, Ebrie, Alangoa, et al.). Made of lightweight wood, dyed black. This sculpture depicts a mother sitting on a chair and breast-feeding her child. The child sits on his mother’s right knee. A fine, carefully executed sculpture, with good, old shiny patina and minor age-related damage (to the back rest of the chair on the reverse, and to the child’s left foot). First half of the 20th century; H: 23 cm. (ME)
