Lot No. 45

Mixed lot (2 items): Ligbi, Ivory Coast, A mask pair with almost identical features.

Mixed lot (2 items): Ligbi, Ivory Coast, A mask pair with almost identical features. - Tribal Art

Two masks, manufactured in almost identical style. Probably of the Ligbi. The Ligbi have many stylistic similarities with the art of some neighbouring tribes, such as the Jimini, Kulango and Senufo (see the projections on den cheeks of both masks, similar to the ‘kpelie masks’ of the Senufo people). The present Ligbi mask pair is made of hard, light brown wood and dyed black on the front side. Both masks feature a hairstyle with typical spirals, lowered eyelids, long, curved nose, small, open mouths and the same scarification marks in relief. Both masks also display a slightly encrusted patina on the face, probably as a result of former sacrificial offerings. A rare pair with good traces of usage both on the inside and on the outside. In excellent condition, with hardly any damage (small, old cracks). First half of the 20th century; H: 33 cm and 34 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.
