Lot No. 4

Djenné Culture (12th-16th c.), early Dogon or Tellem, Mali: A metal pendant with face.

Djenné Culture (12th-16th c.), early Dogon or Tellem, Mali: A metal pendant with face. - Tribal Art

Manifestly an archaeological find (African archaeology). This pendant, with an eyelet for hanging in the upper section, was made of yellow cast-alloy (brass) or bronze in ‘waste mould’. The elongated, oval face displays a long nose in relief and a hairstyle with crest. Eyes and mouth are deliberately executed in openwork. The greenish patina suggests a high percentage of copper in the metal. Probably from the Djenné culture or the forerunners of the Dogon, the Tellem people in Mali. H: 12 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Gal. Pierre Robin, Paris; Viennese private collection.
