The present painting is based on the now lost pastel by Charles Coypel, Woman with a Black Coat and a Muff (known thanks to an engraving by Ravenet), which together with three further pastels constitutes a series of the four seasons (see T. Lefrançois, Charles Coypel. Peintre du roi (1694–1752), Paris 1994, p. 392-393).
