Gaspare Diziani
![Gaspare Diziani - Old Master Paintings Gaspare Diziani - Old Master Paintings](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A141021/normal/gaspare-diziani-3376250.jpg)
(Belluno 1689–1767 Venice)
Saint Jerome with the angel,
oil on canvas, 73 x 56 cm, framed
We are grateful to Bernard Aikema, who examined the painting in the original, for confirming the attribution.
This excellently executed painting has all the features of Gaspare Diziani’s mature style. Works by this artist executed in a similar manner include, for instance, a Bishop Saint in the Joseph B. Francus Collection, Baltimore, and an image of Saint Paul in a private collection in Bassano del Grappa (A. P. Zugni Tauro, Gaspare Diziani, Venice 1971, p. 61/62, plate 224, p. 62, plate 256), both originating from Dizani’s late period. A matching chronological classification in the late 1750s and early 1760s is hence also suitable for the present picture. It was probably intended as an altarpiece for a family chapel in a palace or a villa. A drawing by Diziani with Saint Jerome, which displays a comparable, yet not identical composition, was auctioned on 6 July 2000 at Hauswedell & Nolte in Hamburg as lot 149 (see ill.).
