(Siegen 1577–1640 Antwerp)
The Crucifixion of Christ ,
oil on copper, 33.3 x 26 cm, framed
Provenance:
Lempertz auction, Cologne, 17 November 2012, lot 1133
The present painting is based on an oil sketch by the master, currently preserved in the Museum Rockoxhuis in Antwerp. This sketch served as a bozzetto for a planned altarpiece in the Church of St. Michael in Ghent. After Rubens’ death, his pupil Anthonis van Dyck carried out this assignment. The copper panel adopts Rubens’ composition with very few minor changes. In a letter to the previous owner, Prisca Valkeneers of the Rubenianum confirmed the painting as a product of Rubens’ workshop. The present painting will be included in the supplementary volume of the Corpus Rubenianum, which is in preparation. An alternative attribution of the painting to Rubens’ pupil Victor Wolfvoet II has been suggested.
