Pietro Negri

Pietro Negri - Old Master Paintings

(Venice? c. 1635–1679)
A scene from Roman history,
oil on canvas, 134 x 180 cm, unframed

We are grateful to Bernard Aikema for his suggestion of the attribution.

Pietro Negri was probably from Venice and his paintings display considerable similarities with the works of Antonio Zanchi. The influence of Ruschi, Ribera and Pietro della Vecchia is also detectable. He is associated with the Venetian ‘Tenebrism’ painters, whose works are marked by strong light and dark contrasts. On the grounds of its style of composition based on large size and monumental structure, the present painting is a typical work by this painter.

The subject probably depicts Emperor Constantine receiving the head of the drowned Maxentius. An alternative interpretation would be Augustus with the head of Cicero and his secretary Tiro. We are grateful to P. Gregor Lechner OSB for his suggestion.
