Pieter Mulier, called Il Cavalier Tempesta
(Haarlem about 1637–1701 Milan)
The Adoration of the Shepherds, signed lower right on the stone: Ca…glier T,
oil on canvas, 173 x 229.5 cm, unframed
Literature:
M. Roethlisberger, in: Arte Lombarda 152, 2008/1, p. 56
The present painting is typical of Pieter Mulier’s late period, not only on the grounds of its monumental dimension, but also because of its theme, since the Annunciation to the Shepherds was one of the artist’s preferred subject matters. Its execution clearly reveals the influence of Bassano, Bloemart and Castiglione.
