The present painting comes with a certificate by Klaus Ertz (2011).
The Madonna is depicted here in a painted frame executed in fine glazes. The jewel-like coloration of the floral bouquet to the right of the painting stands out strongly against a black monochrome background. Individual flowers in the surrounding frame make iconographical reference to the medallion. Thus this painting is an important document of the collaboration between Brueghel and his Antwerp painter colleagues, in this case, as Klaus Ertz has demonstrated, Jan van Balen (Antwerp 1611–1654), who executed the figure of the Madonna.
This painting gives important testimony to the collaboration of Flemish artists during the golden age of the Antwerp art scene.
