Giovanni Odazzi

Giovanni Odazzi - Old Master Paintings

(Rome 1663–1731)
Madonna and Child Enthroned with an Angel,
oil on canvas, 77 x 89 cm, framed

We are grateful to Erich Schleier and Francesco Petrucci for confirming the attribution of the present painting.

Odazzi was a pupil of Ciro Ferri and Cornelis Bloemaert and subsequently worked for Giovanni Battista Gaulli, called il Bacciccio, before joining Carlo Maratta. He became a member of the Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon in 1705 and of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome in 1706. Along with Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari, Odazzi played a leading role in the style of Roman Rococo after Maratta’s death (1713). His brothers, Antonio, Nicola and Pietro Odazzi, were also active as painters in Rome. The present painting is closely linked to an altarpiece that Odazzi painted for the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in 1700, the Vision of Saint Bruno.
