Gerard Seghers was a pupil of Abraham Janssen. He lived in Italy between 1611 and 1621, where he was strongly influenced by Caravaggio, Manfredi, Honthorst (Gherardo delle Notti) and other painters. In the mid-1620s he came under the influence of Rubens. Mina Gregori and Marco Ciampolini have given ample evidence of this also on the basis of the present, conspicuously Italianate painting. The composition has been carried out in a ‘piecemeal’ fashion and displays a very wide spectrum of colour nuances.
