We are grateful to Peter van den Brink, Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Aachen, for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph (written communication, 4 July 2013).
An earlier composition that served as the prototype for numerous later copies is preserved in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (inv. no. 539) and is attributed to Quinten Massys or Willem Key. The influences of the aforementioned painting are also visible in the present work.
