oil on panel, 34.7 x 45.8 cm, framed
On the reverse a label inscribed in old handwriting: Sujet de Fruit/ par Vandergabel.
Fred Meijer wrote the previous owner in April 2014: “The still life of fruit and oysters [...] must be the work of a follower of Jan Davidsz. de Heem in Antwerp, probably from the 1640s. It appears to be related to early works by Andries Benedetti, who became a pupil of de Heem in 1638 and who qualified as an independent master in 1640. Your painting may well be by the same hand as a work I have described as ‘possibly by Benedetti’ [...]”. Should the present painting be a work by Benedetti, then according to Meijer it ought to be classified as an early work by this painter.
