Two views from the surroundings of Rome:
(1) View of Genzano and Lake Nemi;
(2) View of Ariccia and the Palazzo Chigi,
both signed and dated at lower right: Hauenstein 1807,

In 1800 Johannes Hauenstein was apprenticed to Johann Heinrich Wüst in Zurich. In 1804 he went to Munich, where he met the painter Johann Georg von Dillis, who was also the director of the local picture gallery. In 1805 Hauenstein travelled to Italy in the company of Johann Georg von Dillis and the latter’s brother, Cantius. He stayed in Rome until 1807, where he painted these two delicately executed views in the city’s surroundings.
