Workshop of Peter Paul Rubens
(Siegen 1577–1640 Antwerp)
Study of an old man,
oil on panel, 61.7 x 48.4 cm, framed
Provenance:
Collection of Edouard Napoléon Mortier, 5th Duc de Trévise, Paris;
Sale, Drouot (Maîtres Bellier et Ader), Paris, 8 December 1947, lot 69 (as attributed to P. P. Rubens)
The present painting is a workshop replica of a prototype now lost (see J. Held, The Oil Sketches of Peter Paul Rubens, vol. I, Princeton, 1980, pp. 600/1, cat. no. 434).
Held mentions nine versions of this composition, which he classifies either as workshop copies or works by Rubens’s followers. The present version was unknown to him. The painting in the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow is generally considered the most successful example within this group (see fig.).
The prototype of the present sketch was used for a number of works by Rubens, such as for the figure of King Balthazar in the Adoration of the Magi in the Prado, Madrid.
